What I Learned From Tonight's Episode of 90210

Themes of 90210 "How Much Is That Liam In the Window"

Upon watching tonight's episode, I noticed several themes that I think people relate to.  I wanted to share the plot line and outline their meaning in our daily lives.  This week's episode tackles:

  • Dating toxic men
  • Extortion
  • Being alone and homeless
  • Family bonds
  • Rape recovery
  • Doing the right thing
  • Mother-daughter competition
  • HIV

Annie is dating a psycho, again.  After getting rid of her suicidal, manipulative ex-boyfriend, she is now currently involved with a "cute film theater student" who just happens to be Liam's estranged brother.  She goes to a reading of a play he wrote, when she finds out that he writes about violence and murder.  This storyline demonstrates how girls tend to fall into traps of dating guys who are wrong for them.  Following your heart instead of your head gets people in to trouble in relationships.  It is obvious that Annie has poor taste in men, and will continue setting herself up for psychos if she doesn't change her behavior.  She is often dismissing dateable men due to minor reasons, then falls for ones who should be throwing red flags.

Adriana is being blackmailed by Javier's uncle into doing things she doesn't want to do like pose topless, mistreat her friends, and be ruthless about money.  Navid tells her that she needs to stand up to him or else it's never going to stop.  I think this is an important topic to address because people are sometimes suckered into doing things they don't want to do.  If you don't stand up for yourself, you can become a victim and allow someone to run your life.  Sometimes, being honest and admitting wrongdoing straight away can save you from a deeper hole of corruption.

Liam is working as a shirtless model and living in his car.  He met a woman who offered to let him live in her pool house.  It turns out that she is the mother of a crazy girl who is obsessed with Liam.  Viewers feel compassion for him, as he has no family or place to call home.  He is struggling to make it on his own, but does things that he'd rather not do.  It makes many us grateful that we don't have to deal with this, and others can relate personally.

Jen and Naomi are communicating again, as Naomi came over to meet her nephew, Jacques.  Jen finds out that Mr. Cannon raped Naomi and she is so angry that she wants to kill him.  Jen immediately reacts in order to protect her sister.  They patch things up, which demonstrates the family dynamic and how family comes together in a time of need, in spite of making terrible mistakes in the past.

Naomi is struggling with whether or not to press charges against Mr. Cannon for raping her.  She previously falsely accused Cannon of sexual harassment before he raped her and now thinks that nobody will believe her.  Most rape victims don't report it to the police, for whatever reason they each have.  It can be hard for a victim to come forward, which many people don't understand.

Mr. Matthews saw Naomi and Cannon at the school the night he raped her.  He drove his car drunk into the West Bev school sign and never told anyone.  By coming forward to help Naomi, he can lose his job as a teacher.  He tells Naomi that he would rather help her convict Cannon than keep his job.  Mr. Matthews is a great example of a decent, honorable person who is willing to do the right thing, even when it hurts him personally.  The 90210, and the world, need more people like him.

Ivy loses her virginity to Oscar when she was mad at Dixon.  Unbeknownst to her, Oscar had been sleeping with Ivy's mom the entire time.  He has been plotting to ruin Ivy's mother's life and exposes them during the middle of a party.  Oscar tells Ivy that she destroyed his family once his father left his mother and she overdosed.  The storyline portrays the competition that sometimes accompanies a mother-daughter duo.  Women can sympathize with Ivy, as they would never want to be in her position. We also feel bad for her mother because she would never want to hurt her.  It makes people examine their own parental dynamics.

Dixon has a horrific scare when his psychotic ex-girlfriend tells him that she is HIV positive.  Ivy was ready to sleep with him right before he found out.  Viewers can relate to the scare of contracting a serious disease like HIV, and feel that sense of relief for Dixon once he finds out he is clean.

Teddy was not seen in this episode, as he explains he was wearing an invisible suit.  He said he was there the entire time.  We can all relate to feeling someone's presence even if they aren't there.

Did you know...

Enrique Iglesias is still dating Anna Kournikova?  They've been together for 8 years!

Bullying is a serious issue right now.  According to a new study on bullying, 17 percent of American students report being bullied two to three times a month or more within a school semester.  Several gay teens have recently committed suicide due to bullying, notably a student from Rutgers, who was secretly filmed having sex and uploaded on the Internet.  Several movements have ensued, including "It Gets Better" campaign, which consists of personal videos by almost every celebrity AND the President.  On September 20th, for #SpritDay, people were encouraged to wear purple in honor of gay adolescents being bullied.  I certainly had my favorite purple shirt on.

Lea Michele got her first film role, in New Year's Eve, directed by Gary Marshall.  This is a sequel to his celebrity-studded original movie, Valentine's Day.

Oprah is going to be in a movie!  Her co-stars will be Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep.  Oh em gee!  It's in early development, but I'd definitely say this has some MAJOR potential.

Mel Gibson is no longer doing a cameo in The Hangover 2.  It turns out the starring members of the film were none-too-thrilled to be associated with him.  The role will now be played by Liam Neeson, to which I say, Thank God!  Taken was an incredible, intense movie and Liam is bad ass!

Russell Simmons called Courtney Love a crackhead.  Although it seems obvious, Courtney is kinda pissed because she thought her and Russell were friends.

John Mellencamp stuck up for Sarah Palin recently, insisting that she really is smart.  I wanted to believe that during the '08 elections, I really did.  I thought, there is NO way she can be as dumb as people say she is.  Sadly, I now think they're right.  She is a joke.

Kim Kardashian has been linked to THREE men this week.  Wow, people really love talking about her. First, she was rumored to being seeing John Mayer, then Kanye West, then Sean Parker!  For those of you who don't know, Sean Parker is the founder of Napster, and was most recently played by Justin Timberlake in the movie, The Social Network.  That movie was awesome by the way.

Lindsay Lohan was spared jail time in the light of her recent arrest for failing her drug test, immediately following rehab.  Lindsay has remained at the Betty Ford Center since her most recent slip up, which must be costing her a fortune of money she doesn't have.  She is arguing with judges that rehab could be damaging to her career.  Sweetie, you have no career.  And if you were that concerned about it, you wouldn't have been pissing it away like you are.  Experts are urging Lindsay to get rid of her mother as her manager, and distance herself from them in general.  Her family IS toxic.

The "Dear John" song by Taylor Swift was kind of boring.  I had higher hopes.  Maybe once I read the lyrics and listen to it a few more times, it will grow on me.

Mel Gibson's baby mama, Oskana Gorieva (or whatever), may potentially be charged with extortion.  She is refusing to surrender her laptop to investigators, which many see as very shady.

In other news, I have been watching Rent on Broadway for 3 days straight with my roommate.  We can't get enough.  I LOVE everyone in the Broadway cast, as well as the original.  Angel and Collins are my favorite.  I think Roger is the hottest.  Matthew thinks Mark on Broadway is.

A Cleveland, Ohio woman was gunned down at work by a man, whom she had warned police about threatening her.  He then used her work pass to go inside and shoot one of her co-workers to death.  This is so disheartening to me to think that police are not protecting people who so obviously need it.

New Gossip

I heard that...

Beyonce is pregnant.  OMG

Kanye West replaced his bottom row of teeth with diamonds cuz he thought they were "cooler." Is he insane?  I guess I kind of already knew.

Victoria's Secret model, Adriana Lima, is modeling a $2 million bra at the upcoming VS Fashion Show.  Two MILLION dollars for a BRA?  Damn...I kind of want it.

Taylor Swift not only dated John Mayer, but she also rips him a new one on a track in her new album.  It's called, "Dear John."  Aww.

Lady Gaga had to postpone her concert stops in Paris due to rioting.  I'm glad she's safe, and knowing her, she WILL be back.

Lindsay Lohan may be going back to jail for a year.  Not mad.

Michael Jackson's father, Joe, is suing Dr. Conrad Murray for somewhere between $10 and $500 million.  That's quite the gap there.  Also, what makes Joe Jackson believe that Murray has $500 million to pay?  Insurance isn't covering for it, and if he doesn't have the money, Jackson can't collect it.  Joe Jackson is a money-grubbing nasty old man.

Hollywood is still obsessed with "Whip My Hair" and Willow Smith.  Snooki, Perez, and Katy Perry have all shown their support.  It IS pretty amazing.

Courtney Cox and David Arquette were spotted being affectionate at Coco's horse show.  I'm not sure whether I want this couple to get back together or not.  What do you think?

Katy Perry and Russell Brand are getting married this weekend in India.  Congrats you two!

In other news, I lost my roommate's dog for 20 minutes today.  I tried to chase after her, but she is too fast, and ran through some major brush and thorns.  I tore through the ditch three times and screamed her name at the top of my lungs.  I couldn't breathe and my chest felt like it was going to explode.  Finally, I found her.  I was so relieved to have my puppy back.  As punishment, I have been ignoring Lexie.  It's so hard though.  I love her so much!

People You Should Follow On Twitter

  1. Lady Gaga, @ladygaga: Her tweets are usually poetic and accompanied by sweet photos.  "http://twitpic.com/2y7z7d I'm on a heater, but this record ain't about poker." " - Lonelydreams + champagne streams, plaza courtyards, I can't swim among them, so ill drink instead a star"
  2. Chunk Handler, @chunkhandler (Chelsea's Dog): Absolutely hysterical.  Sometimes, you really think Chunk is tweeting.  "I feel like taking a long drive up the coast with my head out the window except that's not safe to do while I'm driving." "The interns here have one job. To make sure my bowl is full. If they can't do THAT right. I don't know why they're still even here."
  3. @LindsayInJail:  A hilarious chronicle about Lindsay Lohan's time in jail.  I'd rather follow her than the real Lindsay. "Tried to Whip My Hair back and forth yesterday. Now they're testing me for angel dust. FML." " "Hi sweetie, don't forget your drug test tomorrow morning.""
  4. Trevor Donovan, @trevdon: He is so sweet, and his jokes are so corny, they make you wanna laugh.  I could use more twit pics though! "Psychotic driver picks up Psychotic hitch hiker. Now that's a reality show I would watch" "Laughter lengthens your life and smoking shortens it. So, If you smoke you should at least giggle between drags"
  5. @gagadaily:  For the little monsters out there, GagaDaily provides a wide amount of file sharing for Lady Gaga's music, photos, and personal life.

25 People I Love in Entertainment (and You Should Too)

I wanted to share my 25 of my favorite celebrities with you.  If you don't know who they are, you should look them up.  Let me know if you agree, or have someone else that you think should be on the list!

  1. Lady Gaga:  I've seen her in concert three times already, and I must say that "The Monster Ball" is the greatest show on Earth!  Every single thing she does is entertaining.  She creates beautiful music, sings well especially live, and is a performance artist.  She has a hot body that she works hard for, has an amazing sense of style that never ceases to amaze me, and is an unconventional, undeniable beauty.  She is an incredible person on the inside as well.
  2. Perez Hilton:  His blog is like crack to me.  If you want to know what is going on in celebrity gossip, he is the one to go to.  Perez made himself a name by blogging interesting things, having on-point information (usually), and saying things that others are afraid to say.
  3. Christian Bale:  He is the hottest actor around, in my opinion.  He is so intense and is more concerned with being a good actor than a celebrity.  In fact, he hates fame.  I loved him in "American Psycho" and "The Prestige."  And I must say, he is the BEST Batman to date.
  4. Daniel Tosh: Absolutely hilarious.  I love Tosh.0 and his stand-up.  I can't wait to see him in November!  "Money can't buy you happiness.  But it can buy you a wave runner.."
  5. Katy Perry:  The Teenage Dream album far exceeded any of my expectations.  My favorite songs on her new album are "Circle the Drain," "Peacock," and "Last Friday Night."  After listening to it, I scratch my head and wonder how this is the same girl who started with "I Kissed a Girl."
  6. Drake:  This man is a lyrical GENIUS.  I bought Thank Me Later as soon as it came out and was instantly hooked.  Although I loved his first two singles, "Over" and "Find Your Love," I found there to be so much more he had to give.  The favorite of my friends and mine is "Shut It Down."  It's also really long, and gives you more when you think it's over.  I LOVE that.
  7. The Kardashians:  Even though their show is so fake, I can't help but want to hear about them on twitter and gossip sites.  As people, they are fascinating.  As actresses, they're not that good.  Kim is my favorite.
  8. Trevor Donovan: A real life version of Barbie's boyfriend Ken, he is not only gorgeous, but seems to be a very sweet person.  He plays one of the hotties on 90210, struggling with his sexuality. Off-screen, he loves twitter, and tweets many funny jokes and recognizes his fans.
  9. Justin Bieber:  I have a slight case of Bieber Fever.  His songs are SO catchy!  He can dance too, and seems to be a nice kid.
  10. Chelsea Handler: OMG this girl is hilarious.  I can't wait to see her stand-up next month (the day after Tosh's).  Not only does she have a great show, she is an excellent writer as well.  Her three books will have you ROTFLMMFAO.
  11. Blake Lively:  She is a beautiful young woman with a sweet personality.  She is easily my favorite thing about Gossip Girl.  Her clothes are to die for!
  12. Bruno Mars:  I don't care if he just got charged for possession of cocaine, his new album is awesome!  He is going to make it big.  Check out "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade" (my favorite).
  13. La Coacha:  Most people probably don't know her, but she is a friend of Perez Hilton's and is a great comedienne.  She is making a name for herself through ridiculous parodies and videos.  My favorite is "Pop Trone" which pokes fun at Gaga's "Telephone."  She also has a FABULOUS Spanglish accent.  Chisme time!
  14. Idina Menzel:  My best friend turned me on to her.  She is has the BEST voice out of anyone I've ever heard.  She was in the original cast of Wicked and Rent.  She has an intense jawline and a big ass, but it looks great on her.  She is married to Taye Digs.
  15. Kristen Chennoweth:  The other half of the Wicked duo, Kristin has the cutest personality and squeaky voice.  She emits sunshine from her pores, and has an incredible voice.  I love her character on Glee.
  16. Lea Michele:  This girl is absolutely gorgeous and can sing like it's nobody's business.  I expect many great things from her.
  17. Heather Morris:  Her one-liners on Glee are sooo great.  "Did you know dolphins are really just gay sharks?"  The Britney episode was one of the best yet.
  18. Mike Posner:  His voice is so smooth and unique.  His songs are bad ass too.
  19. Miley Cyrus:  She gets a bad rap, but I give props to this girl for the things she does.  I love her songs, and she always looks hot.
  20. Willow Smith:  Will and Jada's daughter is about to strike BIG, with her new hit single "Whip My Hair" which is the sassy girl/gay anthem for the year.  This girl is FIERCE...and only 9 years old.
  21. Snooki:  I love her no-appologies, don't care what anyone thinks attitude.  She is comfortable in her own skin and knows who she is.  And people love her for that.
  22. Sofia Vergara: Gorgeous woman, beautiful accent, curvaceous body, hilarious.
  23. Rachel Zoe:  Her style is absolutely impeccable.  Fashionista.
  24. Tiesto: If you don't like techno, you will after you listen to DJ Tiesto.  He has the perfect amount of celebrity.  World-famous, but could still probably slip by most people unnoticed in US.  And he gets to do what he loves.
  25. Brandon Flowers:  As the lead singer of The Killers, and a recent solo-artist, he's SO hot, and his I have high hopes for him.

New!!

At the advice of Terry Stewart, CEO of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, I have decided to start a blog.  He spoke at Bowling Green State University today, and I made it a point to attend.  He is an interesting person, and I am really going to use the advice he gave me.  I want to be an accountant for the entertainment industry, and he gave me some good advice.  In addition to writing a blog, Terry also suggested I get an internship in entertainment, and consider moving to LA or NY.  I'm always setting goals for myself, and once I set my mind to something, I usually get it.  Follow me as I try to live my dreams.  I hope I inspire you to do the same.

My aim is to make this blog about things that I find interesting.  I love movies, television, music, and celebrities.  My idol is Lady Gaga.  She will be an overwhelming theme in "Celebrity Pancakes."  I'm also a business geek, so I will try to incorporate that as well.  I want to keep a central theme, but I might stray as I deem necessary.

Stay tuned as I begin my journey into the world of blogging.  It could just be the greatest thing I've ever done.
